Kulkijan polku Trail
Kulkijan polku Trail was completed in 2015 and it combines the old Taitajan taival Trail and Susitaival Trail from Kallioniemi to Särkkäjärvi wilderness hut. The 24-kilometre trail is designed for hiking and cross-country cycling. Kulkijan polku runs along roads and old footpaths. Along the trail there are two resting places with lean-to shelters . Kiieskangas lean-to shelter by Parissavaara belongs to Ilomantsin Erämiehet hunting association, and they have given it to the use of hikers also. In addition to the lean-to shelter, there is a woodshed, a dry toilet and a waste bin. The other resting place is called Ölkönlampi and it is located in Naurisvaara by Ölkönlampi pond. Ölkönlampi has a dry toilet and a woodshed , but there is no waste bin.
Kulkijan polku Trail is easy to hike on. It runs largely along sandy roads. There are hardly any duckboards or steep hills. Information boards along the trail tell you about the area’s local history, culture and nature. The trail has been signposted by orange paint dots.
Susitaival Trail is approximately 95 kilometres in length. It can be described as a trail with hills, forests and peatlands and it proceeds from Möhkö, Ilomantsi, to Patvinsuo National Park. There are accommodation and catering services in Möhkö village at the Southern end of the trail. Suomu Nature Information Hut offers its services in Patvinsuo National Park in the North.
Susitaival runs largely in remote places far from residential areas, but there is a forest road network nearby. There may be limitations to mobile phone network coverage in some areas. The trail is varied and classified as intermediate in difficulty. It runs along footpaths in the forest and esker ridges, roads as well as duckboards. At times it becomes more demanding due to rocky ups and downs in esker ridges. There are four rope-pulley ferries along Susitaival Trail. There are also three wilderness huts and five lean-to shelters for resting and overnight accommodation along the trail. The trail has been signposted by orange paints dots.
